Traditional acupuncture is the insertion of needles transiently into the subcutaneous tissues at specific body sites. To potentiate the effects, implantation of needles has been developed for sustained stimulation. It is believed that the effects of acupuncture are pain relief and skin rejuvenation.
However, not much knowledge exists about the adverse events associated with insertion of gold needles. To our knowledge, scarring alopecia caused by permanent placement of gold needles has not been described in the English-language literature. Here, we report a case of scarring alopecia that developed after permanent gold acupuncture on the scalp.
